Familiarise

Project Date: 2017.
Exhibition Infomation: Kaurna Buidling, University of South Australia Graduate Show.

This project is an exploration into queer macroaggressions and intertextuality. Using the familiar and the unfamiliar, I aim to help reduce stigma behind cis-gendered-male on male gay sex, with exposure will reduce the discrimination and microaggressions queer people receive. An example of macroaggressions I have personally receive was: “I am fine with gay people, but please don’t hit on me or talk about that gay stuff.” Additionally whilst traveling in Malaysia I had a Muslim taxi driver brag about how much marijuana and pornography he consumes, in the conversation I brought up the fact I was queer and he immediately stopped talking to me. The fact that queer pornography cannot be discussed but heterosexual pornography can be, is discriminatory and sexual shaming. These micro aggressions remind us we are different, our friendship comes with specific conditions and that we are other. This is a hugely difficult plethora of subjects to posit. The resolved work aims simply familiarise people with gay pornography. The end product aims to visually look like gay porn printed on clear plastic that is covered in 1980s design motifs and then draped over IKEA furniture, to create the feel of strange modern abstracted images that are not clearly recognisable.

Personal question: How can I familiarise people with queer sex, to help remove stigma and discrimination with queer sensuality/sexuality?

Future responses or ideas from this project

Taking visual cues from this project, I also worked on an exhibition called: Justification. This exhibition uses the same visual looks and graphics but instead of sex. I look at the need to justify my queer self. in my queer work at university needed lots of justification for using pornographic images to my govenment having a public and expensive plebesite that allowed others to believe they should have an opinion on my rights to have a realtionship.
